Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni conveyed this offer of help during a phone call with Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi of Pakistan’s Interior Ministry.
Solidarity Amid Catastrophe
Iran’s Minister Momeni expressed deepest regret over the devastating flooding and landslides which had taken place across Pakistan, with severe flooding occurring mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan being particularly hard hit. Through his call, Minister Momeni offered any assistance needed by those affected by these floods while affirming Pakistan as its “brotherly neighbor”, stating Tehran stands with them “shoulder to shoulder”. Humanitarian Crisis Enfolds in Europe
Flooding caused by monsoon rains has unleashed havoc across northern and northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 700 and forcing over 25,000 to be evacuated from their homes. Buner district alone experienced one devastating flash flood which claimed over 278 lives, according to news agencies including IRANPRESS, AP News, The Guardian and others. Throughout all three regions the death toll reportedly exceeds 700 while numerous flash floods claimed nearly all lives that happened simultaneously (such as Buner district). Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region has seen heavy rain, river swelling, and landslides take more than 320 lives, prompting the provincial state of emergency declaration. Some districts – Bajaur, Swat and Battagram in particular- also suffer widespread infrastructure damage, displacement issues and the tragic loss of military rescue helicopter and its five crew members (Wikipedia).
History of Reciprocal Support
Iran’s outreach is not unprecedented: In 2022, Pakistan sent relief supplies–tents, blankets, and medical kits–to Iran during its devastating floods as an act of mutual respect and willingness for cross-border humanitarian engagement.
What Does This Gesture Represent?
Iran’s timely offer of assistance during Pakistan’s moment of need demonstrates their close ties, founded upon religious, cultural, and geopolitical bonds. Furthermore, this gesture highlights humanitarian solidarity that transcends borders – something especially necessary at a time when climate-induced disasters have become increasingly frequent and intense.
As global attention turns towards Pakistan’s unfolding disaster, Iran may help galvanize other regional partners and international bodies into providing additional aid. Effective cooperation, coordinated resources and rapid humanitarian aid entry remain critical elements for strengthening Pakistan’s capacity for recovery and reconstruction.
