Ottawa — Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) has escalated its opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by pressing the federal government for sanctions to be imposed against his administration as international scrutiny mounts regarding Israel’s military actions and blockade of Gaza.

Heather McPherson of the NDP Foreign Affairs Critic highlighted the urgency of the situation, demanding that “Mark Carney immediately suspend the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement and impose sanctions against Netanyahu”. She brought attention to Gaza where over 50,000 Palestinians have died since conflict erupted in October 2023 – most being civilians.cit Canada’s NDP umplut +4, The Times (+4) and Financial Times +4 all supported these statements by voting yes (in percentage terms).
The NDP’s demands include:

Suspension of Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement.

Establishment of a two-way arms embargo against Israel. Canada’s New Democratic Party supported this proposal and further sanctioned Netanyahu and his cabinet members as well.

Recognition of Palestine to support a two-state solution has also been put forth, along with measures by Canada’s NDP in support of this cause. Such steps seek to put pressure on Canada to take more decisive actions against actions seen as violating international law or human rights.

Canadian officials joined their counterparts from France and Britain in expressing alarm over Israel’s military operations in Gaza, issuing a joint statement. These countries threatened “concrete actions” if Israeli forces fail to end their offensive and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The NDP’s call for sanctions reflects growing domestic and international demands for accountability as well as an evaluation of foreign policy regarding Israel-Palestine conflict.

As Gaza continues to experience widespread famine and infrastructure collapse, and reports of widespread hunger, the NDP urges immediate steps to alleviate suffering and uphold international humanitarian standards.

The Canadian government has not responded to the National Democratic Party (NDP) demands; however, increasing pressure from opposition parties and international allies may influence policy decisions regarding Canada’s role in responding to Gaza crisis.

These remarks have drawn wide condemnation from various quarters, with human rights organizations and international observers raising serious concerns over the increasing normalization of genocidal language in political discourse. Many individuals and groups have demanded accountability for such remarks made publicly.

This incident illustrates escalating tensions and highlights the need for responsible discourse from global leaders. With Gaza facing increasing humanitarian hardship, calls for restraint and compliance with international law become ever more essential.

The international community remains vigilantly engaged, advocating for renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate conflict and safeguard civilian lives. At present, however, neither the UN nor other international bodies have issued official statements in regards to Congressman Fine’s remarks.
