After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir which claimed several security personnel’s lives and left others injured, emotions are running high across India and calls for strong retaliation ring out loud and clear; defense and geopolitical experts advise taking measured and multidimensional steps that strengthen India’s security posture while limiting regional instability.

The Pahalgam attack, apparently perpetrated by militants operating with cross-border support, provides another reminder of India’s vulnerability in Kashmir. These types of attacks often follow a familiar pattern: stealthy operations against patrol units followed by quick departure into densely forested areas – yet this attack challenges India’s counter-terrorism strategy and necessitates reevaluating existing protocols.

Isolating sponsors of terrorism on international platforms like the UN and FATF may prove more detrimental in the long run than immediate military retaliation,” noted former Indian diplomat Rajiv Bhatia. Additionally, India should push harder for sanctions against non-state actors and their backers as soon as possible.

On the ground, increasing surveillance through drones, thermal imaging cameras and better sharing of intelligence between local forces and national agencies could help avoid future ambushes. “We need smarter defense mechanisms in place in areas known for infiltration corridors,” according to one retired Army colonel familiar with Kashmir operations.

Maintaining internal harmony is also critical. Calls for unity, communal peace and continued support for development should be amplified so as to thwart attackers’ deep-seated goal of creating division and fear in Kashmir.

Though political voices call for surgical strikes or cross-border operations, defense analysts advise caution. A hasty military response could escalate tensions with Pakistan while diverting global attention away from what the real issue is: terrorism. According to strategic affairs expert Dr. Meera Patel.

India must respond to the Pahalgam attack with an effective yet balanced response, including diplomatic outreach, tactical security upgrades, and community resilience building measures. Only then can it honor those lost while also helping prevent similar tragedies in future.
